- Dedicated Server = A machine whose primary role is to "serve"
out information or act as a central repository for data to users
on a network. Most commonly an NT box.
- Disaster Recovery = A plan for recovering your data after it
has been lost, stolen, or damaged. The most common tool is a tape
backup solution.
- Domain Name = Your unique Internet address (www.yourname.com).
- Firewall = Any device or software that keeps external Internet
users from remotely accessing your computer while you are online.
Most commonly found where xDSL solutions are in place.

- Hard Drive = This is where your program application and data are
stored long term.
- ISP = Internet Service Provider - a company you pay a monthly fee
to in order to have Internet access. Most people mistake a web browser
for their ISP.
- LAN = Local Area Network - a LAN typically resides within your office
or building site.
- NIC = Network Interface Card - used to send Ethernet data over twisted
pairs of cable.
- Peer-to-Peer Network = A machine that acts as a server and as a workstation
at the same time. This technology is most commonly used by Microsoft
Networking. (File Sharing)
- RAM = Random Access Memory - this is memory that is installed in
your computer. This is where programs are loaded temporarily when you
run an application. Not to be confused with a hard drive.
- Security Policy = A formal statement of rules that people who are
given access to an organization's technology and information must abide
by. Essential for protecting your data.
- WAN = Wide Area Network - typically a network goes wide when it leaves
the business site and connects offices in other cities or countries.
- Web Browser = The program that allows you to surf the World Wide
Web, like Internet Explorer and Netscape.
- xDSL = Digital Subscriber Line - a low cost, high speed Internet
connection. Operates at rates of 384K-768K. The "x" before the DSL indicates
the type and speed of service.
